Hi Jim Jones,
I've had a Medalist since the late forties/early fifties.I've bought
three others over the years, the last one last Dec. for a 5wt.as I'm in
trout country now. My others are1595 1/2s. When the rimmed spools came
out I bought those and replaced the weakest link.(anyone for old
spools?) The old frame is fine though I finally did have to replace the
outer ring. Parts are inexpensive and available. The brake is not much
more than an over-run device though in the trout sizes it will do the
job quite well. I use mine in the estuary environment without any
problems. Though for the hard salt ie bonefish etc, I do have a Pate
anti-reverse. A jewel and flawless for its job.One can talk all they
want about the merrits of different freshwater reels but fundamentally
they are line holders in my opnion. Don't be afraid to invest in one.
They've never let me down in the field.Recent record permit was taken
with a Medalist! ( not the reel I'd useor recomend!)but proved it was
tough enough for the job!
Regards, Chuck
