Jim,
I've had one since the mid '80s that I now use for steelheading on
the Clearwater in Idaho. The reel adequately holds the line. Last
December I caught a 28" A-run male and had no problem with the reel.
Everything was in the rod and fingering the line. The only upgrade
I've done was to replace the spool with the newer rim control type.
Because it's an older 1592 1/2 the foot barely fits on to my 8wt but
I image I can get a newer foot to replace it rather inexpensively.
I was down on the Clearwater yesterday and caught 2.5 A-runs. The
third one threw the hook just as I was bringing it to hand. They were
nice fish but technically not steelhead as they were all in the 16"
range. Still, impressively bright and in great shape considering they
ran the gauntlet of 8 dams to reach the Clearwater.
