Just a small correction. There is a WA DNR campground at Merrill Lake right on the 
lake.
It's often full in the summer, don't know about now. Many people pack a boat and 
head for the west shore to camp as well. 

Also near St. Helens are Coldwater and Castle lakes. Both should be fishing
well from now to first snowfall. In the vicinity are also the N. Fork Lewis
and Muddy Rivers both SW of MSH above Swift Reservoir. A little further 
afield are the Cowlitz and Cispus drainages accessed (usually) via SR12 and
Randle. Tons of nearly deserted small to medium streams,alpine to sub-alpine
lakes, hiking, camping, and scenery all through this region but areas of 
heavy ORV activity also. If you want more information about this region
