I got into this game about 5 years ago and I got a
pretty good case of sticker shock at the beginning.
Since then, I've come to appreciate quality fly rods
and lines. Makes long days on the water less taxing
on a body.
However, I have never gotten over the price of
high-end reels. I think a fly reel ranks on a
technology scale somewhere between a door knob and a
trailer hitch. When you can buy a baitcasting reel
that's built like a Swiss watch for about $75, why
does a middle-priced fly reel cost at least twice
that?
People tell me 'Well, it's milled from a single block
of aircraft-grade aluminum.'
I bet I could wave a hundred-dollar bill around in any
saloon in Seattle and find a machinist who would turn
me a really nice, aircraft-grade trailer hitch as
well. But why?
