Mike:
30 yrs. or so ago. I observed a similar scenario.
The Samish River used to be packed with fishermen, and steelhead. Returning home with a pair of fish by 10 am was not unusual. We laughingly referred to it as "Elbow Creek" due to the density of fishermen.
OK, the story . . . fisherman #1 hooks and loses a steely on drift gear, the fish breaking off the main line at the swivel (you had to really put the "heat" on a fish in those crowded conditions). About an hour or so later, another fisherman "hooked" the same fish. Upon landing the fish he found that his hook had passed through the eye of the swivel of fisherman #1's broken off gear, thus reconnecting him with this unfortunate fish. Being the nice guy that he was, fisherman #2 returned the swivel/lead/bobber rig to fisherman #1, what a sport!
