Here's my "basic SRC Fly." Just a simple candlefish/sand lance imitation.
Hook: Mustad 3906 #6 or #8. I've found stainless steel hooks to be brittle. I go through a lot of flies beach fishing, and the cheap hooks work just fine for me. Wing: Tie in a few strands of silver crystal flash about 1/2 way down the shank. Flip the hook over & tie in a bunch of white hair. Flip the hook back up & tie in a bunch of olive hair. I've been using Yak hair lately, though polar bear, calf tail, llama, and various synthetics work as well. Head: Build up with olive thread. Stick on 2mm silver or yellow eyes. Epoxy.
