I spent 2 summer working as a National Park Ranger at the National Recreation Area outside of Gunnison. It was at a time when the Gunnison was very down fishery wise. Even with it down it was great fun. Lots of access between the Taylor all the way to Montrose. Was a good stretch as I recall around Cimarron. I spoke to a guide at the fly fiahing show from the area and he said below Black Canyon is now amazing. The trail down to the river at the Black Canyon was brutal. As I remember a couple of hours down and half a day up. Access below the monument is a bit easier. Also back towards Blue Mesa if you take some of the roads (need map) south (they were gravel when I worked there) there are some great beaver ponds if you like that type of venue. Mike

The St. Vrain runs through there, it's John Gierach's home water, if I'm not mistaken. I love the St. Vrain, and although it's not known for big fish, the fishing is steady and reliable. It was all about hoppers when I was there. There's a city park in Lyons that offers easy access to willing trout, but driving upstream toward Estes, you find other accesses to the river with different surprises. Lots of streams there, if you drive up into Rocky Mt National Park from Loveland, there are so many options, some hike-ins where you can try for reintroduced native greenback cutthroat, if you're in to finding different species - they're not big, but they're pretty.
