When you do get one it is easy enough to calibrate by putting it in ice water (32 deg. F) and boiling water (212 deg. F) and noting the difference at each extreme temperature. If it's off by much it's probably easier to exchange for a different one.

No matter what brand thermometer I have seen, they can be bad wrong up to 5 degrees off. Check for temperatures that are the same between thermometers, and reject all that are not close. I find one in a metal sleeve is better than a plastic sleeve, as it sinks faster. As you can tell, I am not a big believer in brand names.
