Me too!!
I've got a DV iMac which always does this. It's in an Airport
network. I've trashed Recent Items, recent servers, appleshare,
appletalk and networking preferences and counselled it in many forms,
but "NO, I'm always going to hang at startup" it says.
I too wonder Wotzup, as do the kids at school who keep telling me
"I'ts frozen". Bah
(and i'm about to install OS X on it so what might happen then?)

You don't say when you're waiting, but if it's before the happy mac
appears you need to set your startup disk in the Startup Disk control
panel.
Either that or the machine is possibly trying to find a network
somewhere. Make sure your networking is turned off if you're not
using it.

I have exactly this same problem with my G4 Powerbook (550mhz). OS9.2.2.
Happy Mac appears, so do the extensions, desktop pic, popup folders etc.
From here it hangs for up to 2 minutes often longer before the rest of the
desktop icons appear.
What may be causing this glitch?. I used to have this on my G4 tower
(400Mhz) but the problem vanished when I removed some extensions, but can't
remember which ones.
Any thoughts on this at all?
