Hey all,

I realise that it's not customary to respond to one's own queries, but I
think this will be relevant to many WAMUG users:
My "Wireless ADSL Modem Gateway" is in fact an ADSL modem (according to
Netgear's Tech Support person it is capable of a maximum speed of 2Mb/s)
with ethernet router and WAP (802.11b). The tech support people at Netgear
and iinet expressed reservations about using this set up with a new
broadband2 plan, they indicated it may be incompatible and would definitely
under-perform. Despite their vague foreboding comments I decided to upgrade
my plan and have consistently achieved speeds well in excess of 3Mb/s when
accessing international material (this is over the 802.11b network) and
downloaded a 461MB file from iinet's ftp at an average of 790KB/s (this was
done through the ethernet network). It seems the only limit to my download
speeds are those artificially imposed by iinet's software (ensuring I don't
get above the 8Mb/s). I live about 2km my local phone exchange.
