I would go with the 3CCD as it enables a lot more information to be
recorded to the tape, hence easier to correct in post and edit.
Panasonics sub 2k machines are excellent and do a fairly reasonable
job of taking Photo's also.
Sony and Cannon do reasonable models in this price range, but I feel
the Panasonic has a fairly reasonable lens and those 3CCd's, a good
all round package.
Do not forget a very good tripod and carry case allow a reasonable
amount from budget for these. Especially tripod as it will survive
more cameras than this one.. Lights are another thing, but I have
managed some interesting jobs with the workman floods usually on
special at Bunnings or similar outlets for 50 or under. Just remember
to be very careful with White Balance using these, although with the
3CCD,s FCP will be able to correct most problems(Yellow Tinge). But,
as much care should be taken to record scene / imagery correctly
first time around as post-production costs.

Do I still have to ensure they have firewire, dv in/out?
or is USB 2 now fastt enough?
MinDV standard is for Firewire, USB is not and will not sustain the
throughput required for capturing. Exception being for Digital
Photographs captured on camera, hence most DV will have a USB
connector and that is what it is for .
Sustained Throughput means dropping of frames incorrect time-codes
lots of headaches, same problem exists for the HardDrive versions.
