I agree with Rob on the Panasonic. We do a lot of indoor and outdoor filming and find the quality excellent.... and yes in my opinion firewire connection is a must have.

Another thing to consider is the film loading... if the tape loads from the bottom forget it unless you can make a special adapter to raise the camera up and off to the side of the tripod bottom loaders are the pits when the tape ends and another is needed quickly. And apart from the tripod problem bottom loaders are in my experience mechanical tape ejection which is also slower than the press open, lift out of the top loaders.

Oh and while i am here another thing you may wish to consider. Again from my experience if the camera is on a tripod the filming tends to be static and can become quite boring even if that being filmed is not.... i prefer to be able to pan and zoom etc which i find jerky if using a tripod. But.... even as small and light as the cameras are these days they can still get very heavy if filming hand held for any length of time so i would recommend you consider a monopod. If you are unsure and would like to try one give me a shout and you can borrow ours for a few days to try it.

Hi WAMUGers
I think i have to purchase a Digital Video camera for school before the end of
the year.
I have around $1300 to spend.
I have been happy with the Sony that we have had for a few years.
Canon seem very good.
The Panosonic 3CCD range sound good. Especially for indoor shooting.

I would go with the 3CCD as it enables a lot more information to be recorded to the tape, hence easier to correct in post and edit.

Panasonics sub 2k machines are excellent and do a fairly reasonable job of taking Photo's also.

Sony and Cannon do reasonable models in this price range, but I feel the Panasonic has a fairly reasonable lens and those 3CCd's, a good all round package.

Do not forget a very good tripod and carry case allow a reasonable amount from budget for these. Especially tripod as it will survive more cameras than this one.. Lights are another thing, but I have managed some interesting jobs with the workman floods usually on special at Bunnings or similar outlets for 50 or under. Just remember to be very careful with White Balance using these, although with the 3CCD,s FCP will be able to correct most problems(Yellow Tinge). But, as much care should be taken to record scene / imagery correctly first time around as post-production costs.

Any advice would be appreciated please.

Do I still have to ensure they have firewire, dv in/out?
or is USB 2 now fastt enough?

MinDV standard is for Firewire, USB is not and will not sustain the throughput required for capturing. Exception being for Digital Photographs captured on camera, hence most DV will have a USB connector and that is what it is for .

Sustained Throughput means dropping of frames incorrect time-codes lots of headaches, same problem exists for the HardDrive versions.

Cheers!
