I purchased a replacement Epson C81 for my C61 because it started producing black lines that couldn't be cleaned away. About the same time one of my sons had an Epson do the same thing - but he needed some urgent jobs to be done so I lent my new printer to him. While using my OKI laser I started to get black lines!!! Troubleshooting suggested that "to get rid of the filth print several pages - it might take up to 9 to clear". The process worked. My C61 had not gone to the tip at this stage so I tried the same procedure. It worked! To the best of my memory the hint Lloyd has suggested is at http://www.maxpatchink.com/epsonclean.shtml I have turned off my machine as he suggests and the old C61, filled with Epson inks only these days, hasn't missed a beat. I hope my last statement is not tempting fate.

Just a piece of info I picked up. I cannot vouch for it.

You should turn off your Epson printer each night or when you are not using
it because, so the information says, the inkjets remain exposed when it is
on and this causes evaporation and eventual clogging. By turning it off the
jets are closed off and prevents this.

I have no technical knowledge of this and cannot defend it but I read it on
the internet somewhere. For "internet" read "shared ignorance". But there
you are. Since then, I turn it off that and my RX 650 has had no problems.
Could be just good luck!

 Hi Roger,

Epson printers are excellent whilst they work, but be aware that if the jets
gets clogged and cannot be cleaned it will cost you a replacement printer!!
I have had 3 Epson printers now and all of them totally useless even after
having taken them to the service people. The advice was buy a new printer as
the repairs will cost you more! My last Epson was not even 3 years old and
still looks new. Besides I had a stock of very, very expensive inks which I
 had to throw away.

Do not know how the Canons or HP fare. But personally I have gone to laser
 printers instead.
