Just be careful about those comments re running water, Peter...;-)

I'm going in Cowaramup. We are precisely 7.2kms from the exchange,
which is
precisely 2.8kms too far.

Yes !
And i would guess your telephone speech levels are down UNLESS
they have used " Line Conditioning " in which case you could simply
could not run ADSL anyway .
Line conditioning cuts off the high frequency path needed for ADSL .
Even worse .... IF you are on copper the whole way it's probably
unlikely
they would need to make a " fibre to the node " installation .
What you need is a subdivision to take place next to you with a heap
of people
applying for phones .
Sorry .....!

Meanwhile, down the road, a caravan park which is
on a different exchange, but only 2kms from us, has recently
connected to
broadband AT THE INVITATION OF TELSTRA!
We seem to be in a black spot of some .5 to 1.8kms in length and
"there's
nothing we can do". RUBBISH!!
I told the regional technical manager that he could save his breath
about G3
and the whiz bang stuff the new services will do. Until he can get me a
basic broadband service, NOT via a satellite dish, I don't care about
watching TV on my mobile phone!!
It's a farce.

You don't have to work in the mining industry to have broadband
problems. We have just moved into a house in East Cannington (that is
not in the outback incidentally) and checked that ADSL was
available before we bought it. We applied to Westnet for a
connection -
yes, broadband is available in that area. We then found out that we
only have half copper to the house and ADSL is not available.
It took many phone calls to Westnet, Telstra and Optus to get this
information.
We are eligible for a satellite service, normally used by people in
the country who are a long way from the phone exchange. We have
changed
our phone connection to Telstra in the hope that
they will put in more wires so we can get ADSL. Telstra don't seem to
have any interest in upgrading the service, but we hope that if we
have
the phone and broadband with BigPond (yuk) they might
connect us to the 21st century.
In the meantime we are back on dialup - it's like living in a house
without running water.
