Hello Steven
How frustrating for you. You have our sympathies. Just hang in there.
Anyway, you could also try connecting the two machines up via firewire
and starting the faulty one in T mode. That way you can eliminate the
operating system and hopefully just find the file you need.
Perhaps you have already tried this. But if not and you need some
guidelines please let the list know.

Peter, to clarify, I tried creating an archive via the finder, ie.
creating
zip file. Entourage itself doesn't open, it just goes through to the
database rebuild options, and each time that is tried it's back to
square
one.
Bob, to answer your query, the other copy method I tried was
wirelessly over
home network to another machine. Whilst other files copied across no
problem, this problem file just wouldn't. Actually, you gave me one
idea
which stupidly I hadn't even thought of, ie. copying to flash drive.
I'll
give that a shot when I'm in front of the dodgy machine again, but I
don't
hold much hope :-(
I did try to connect the PowerBook to my MacBook Pro via Firewire to
try
copying that way, except another hurdle to jump over ended up being
that the
Network icon within System Preferences on the PowerBook just doesn't
open up
- perhaps a function of the hard disk problem, perhaps just another
problem
altogether?! Anyway, I left that one alone.
Cheers, Steven

But...when I try and make a copy of the Database file, I can't. I
get error
messages like "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some
data in
'Database' could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
If I try to create an Archive of the file, I get "An error occurred
while
archiving a file".
Other files copy and archive without a problem. Except of course the
file I
want. I'm guessing this might be because Entourage was an open
application
when the disk damage has occurred, or the Entourage file just
happens to be
sitting on the part of the disk which is damaged (wild uneducated
guesses on
my part).
Were you creating the archive in the Finder as a Zip file, or from
within Entourage, ie, as part of an export process?
