Hi Stuart, As both a Mac & phone expert, could you just clarify the situation re 3G coverage with the iPhone - particularly for us country residents.
As I understand it, the iPhone works on the 850Mhz, the 1900Mhz and the 2100MHz bands. I believe that Telstra's NextG country coverage uses the 850MHz spectrum - so the iPhone will be 3G compatible - albeit at Telsta's exorbitant rates/plans. However, I seem to remember reading that while Optus & Vodaphone will be fully 3G compliant with the iPhone in the cities, where they use the 2100MHz spectrum, when they roll out their nationwide expansion it is using the 900MHz spectrum, which is not compatible with the iPhone? I also seem (vaguely) to remember that in the country areas the iPhone might still work with the Optus & Vodaphone services, but that it won't be at 3G service levels - I'm not sure exactly what that means - presumably much lower speeds? (I might add that although I'm reasonably Mac-savvy, I have yet to actually get my first mobile phone! - though I'm coming under increasing pressure to rectify that! - and I was thinking that going straight to an iPhone might mean I don't have to bother with working out how to drive a traditional mobile phone) So could you just clarify how that all works for country coverage with the iPhone and, practically, which would be the sort of stuff that is 3G only or not fully covered.
