Peter,
If you are used to the reception reach of CDMA, as I was, then I
strongly suggest that you get one of the phones with a green tick as
a replacement. The green tick phones have superior reception modules
in them, and their reception reach is about twice the distance of
phones without a green tick.
When I got my present LG550 as a CDMA replacement I noticed that no
Nokia phone had a green tick. That may have changed in the meantime.
The LG550 is nearly as good as my 7y-old CDMA phone, but when I
unscrewed the extendable antenna of the old phone, and put my special
length of fence wire in the socket, it added another 5 to 10 km to
its range. The new phone has no removable antenna, so I can't use
that trick. I do a lot of walking, so the car kit that everyone
suggest is not an option, unless someone can supply a <1kg car!
By the way, I bought my new phone on Ebay, paying two-thirds the
price they wanted in Perth shops!

Thanks for your suggestions. My attack of lust over the iPhone has
diminished considerably due to the hefty price (they will be $100 in
1 year) and hacking the SIM is probably illegal and
I would be seriously annoyed if I turned it into a brick. I have a
CDMA phone and now that their life has been extended by a few months
I will look at replacing it with a Nokia.
