Yes if it works with 10.4.11 then one would "assume" it's more an

Long threads,..gotta love em! ;o)

I trust that that means there is no punishment suffered by the
originator of the thread apart from the growing bemusement,
bewilderment and horror at his creation.
BTW, I followed up a suggestion from Ronni and removed every trace of
Epson Scan I could find before restarting and installing epson
12700_pr67ph_twain_driver_and_epson_scan_utility_277a but it still
installed version 273.
Perhaps Epson Support was correct and not just trying to sell me a
later model when it was stated that 1670 is incompatible with recent
Mac updates.

Whew; I got dizzy scrolling through all those messages!
Kev
YES but if it's a 10.5.x issue then you'd think in theory it should
do the
same thing. To double check it you'd need to run it on two
different "other"
machines, one running 10.5.x and one running say 10.4.x. If it
doesn't work
on all of them, then you'd assume it should be the hardware. If it
doesn't
work on both 10.5.x machines but does work on 10.4.x machines you'd
assume
it's the software.
That would be the true test as I see it.

Hi Bob
Ok, sorry should have worded it as...
"So it's *probably* not a hardware fault with your scanner."
Just seems to much of a coincidence that two people with exactly
the
same
model of scanner, on the same OS having the scanner which was
working before
just stop at the same time.
YES ! But that said
there has been a lot of work done with the software by some
knowledgeable types
without success .
The test at Kevin's tomorrow should narrow the field .
With hardware it's not unusual for a particular model to experience
similar faults
located in similar locations on moving parts ... this could be one
of them .
Cheers
Bob
But hey,..it could be a hardware fault too, in which case,
weird,...that it
happens all at the same time. ;)
By all means I'm happy to be proven wrong, I was just offering
extra
info to
let Ian know that I had someone with the exact same problem, doing
exactly
the same thing, under the same OS when it was working before
"something"
changed.

Hi Ian
Just to add to this for your interest.
I was out doing another job for a client today, which got fixed
very
quickly, so they asked me to look at their scanner which had
stopped
working.
Lo and behold, it was an Epson Perfection 1670.
Running a new iMac with 10.5.6. Would come up with a message
that it
cannot
recognise the document after the preview scan and just show the
preview as
white with nothing on it.
Trashed the preferences, restarted.
Updated to 10.5.8.
Repaired permissions.
Uninstalled and reinstalled from a downloaded driver.
Removed and checked TWAIN drivers.
Checked Image capture.
Still the same, no joy.
So it's not a hardware fault with your scanner,
What makes you so sure of that ... ?
what if the sensor has say a broken wire and simply cannot send
the
signal
or sends only a very low level signal to the software ?
Bob
so you can rule out taking
it to get looked at ;o) (And thanks for the heads up on
ServiceWest,
hadn't
realised that.)
A lot of googling didn't really turn up anything useful at all.
Unfortunately the client had to go out so we ran out of time to
keep
looking
at it.
I just had an idea driving back, which you may want to try.
From the downloaded update, uninstall the drivers. (When you
open up
the
update it will be set to custom install, but if you click that
(in
the top
left hand corner) you can choose Uninstall.
So ran that and uninstall their drivers.
The restart and just try scanning without installing anything.
(I'm just wondering if there is a "default" TWAIN driver
installed
which is
conflicting with the Epson one.)
If doesn't work at all, I'd then try installing it straight
from the
CD that
came with the Scanner, rather then the update. Just to see if it
makes a
difference.
See how you go with that. Will be interested to hear back.
Just thought I'd let you know.
Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Kevin.
I accept. Would you be at home tomorrow morning? What is your
address.
Margaret will jump at this as an excuse to go on further to the
Mundijong Spud Shed for some cheap vegies.

Hi Ian
I'd be hesitant to suggest taking it to a repairer without
giving
them a
call first. Most places would charge you before looking at
it, as
they have
a "standard" quoting fee these days, and some of them can be at
least
$75-$100 just to look at it.
If you then consider that you can get a new scanner for around
$150,
it's
sometimes not worth it.
Not saying that's always the case, just something to consider.
ServiceWest are a repairer for anything Epson, so may pay to
give
them a
call tomorrow and see what they say - 9474 4990.
Hope that helps a bit.
Kind Regards
Daniel
Hi Daniel
ServiceWest gave up repairing Epson some time ago. PrintCom,
in Mt
Lawley (9371 8600) do it now. They charge $80, plus any
replacement
parts, to look and repair.

Hi Ian
One thing also to note which happens with some scanners and
software, is
that when the TWAIN (scanner driver) is in use with one
Application
the
other Application doesn't always get control of it.
For example, if you've just tried to use it with Epson Scan
and
found it
didn't work then opened Image Capture straight away it
"generally"
won't
always work. If you restart the computer and open Image
Capture
first
(and
not open Epson Scan), and then see if it works from there.
That way, if it doesn't work with the Epson software, then
you've
got
a fall
back at least.
I'd be surprised if it doesn't work full stop though, as
I've got
clients
who have similar models.
Hope that helps.
Kind Regards
Daniel
That is interesting Daniel. I did try to use Image Capture
immediately
after failing with Epson Scan.
However, I have downloaded and installed Vuescan and still
obtain
pristinely blank scans. It looks like I trot along to a
repairer
with
the 1670 under my arm.
I will let you all know the result.

Hello Ian,
Did you have this version Scanner Driver 2.77A installed,

OS X
10.5.x?
Thanks Ronni
I had Version 273. So I downloaded V.277a, opened the dmg and
clicked
on the Installer, assuming that it would uninstall V.273
first. I
didn't, so I trashed the V.273 application, emptied the Trash
and
clicked on the Installer once again. No luck! V.273
returned to
Applications folder. Running a scan still produces a blank
sheet.
The
only other mention of 'scanning' that I can find is the
Reference
Guide in the Documents folder.

Good afternoon all
I have just discovered from Epson Support that the reason
why
my
scanner now goes through all the motions and noises of
scanning a
document, but produces only a blank sheet, is because of
incompatibility with recent versions of Mac OSX.
Apparently I
have
to work via Image Capture.
Opening Image Capture doesn't do much and clicking on the
scanner
ikon just produces another blank page. Pogue's Missing
Manual
doesn't help.
Where can I find instructions on how to scan documents
with my
1670
or do I need a replacement scanner? Your help would be much
appreciated.
