Yes I copied over all the old itunes stuff - it never bothered the old
setup
Both 9.0.3 - but now under leopard, formerly tiger
may indeed have opened iT before connecting drive - I forget
choosing the library after option-launch (or in preferences) is what I
meant by
"But when I tell the new itunes where it is it just ignores me"
I point it at my iT folder, a progress bar says 'updating library',
but nothing changes, even after relaunch. (it IS the folder I should
be choosing? The actual 'library' files are greyed-out in iT prefs so
I guess I'm not after those)

I just got a new mac (well, new to me...) and migrating over seems
to have been pretty smooth. Probably shouldn't have said that. But
iTunes has me stumped.
My library is still on an external firewire drive where it has
always been - I just told the old itunes where it was and all was
well. - it claims to be updating library but the window just shows
some old stuff which hasn't been in my itunes for years and doesn't
seem to reflect any actual collection of files that I can find -
must be created by some old library xml file.
Just to see, I pointed it at the empty itunes folder in user>music,
and dragged a couple of albums onto the itunes icon. It duly added
them - but all the old stuff still appears too. I could delete the
unwanted stuff from within itunes and bring it all in again, but
I'm losing the cover artwork that was laboriously added (these are
from my own cds, not itunes store stuff) and it's all getting a bit
irritating.
Can anyone from the 'itunes for dummies' dept help please?

Hi Alastair,
Sounds like you might have migrated an old iTunes Library file across.
Was the old Mac iTunes the same version as iTunes on the new Mac?
Did you open iTunes on the new Mac before you connected the external
Drive and had it mounted?
Your external HD needs to be mounted before launching iTunes or
iTunes will create a new blank library on your startup drive.
i.e You need to have the external drive up and running prior to
launching iTunes.
If your iTunes library files (the entire \iTunes\ folder) is on the
External Drive.
1.Hold Down The Option Key as you start iTunes
2. Select Choose Library & select the iTunes Library file in the
iTunes folder on the External Drive.
