Hi Alastair, You are wanting to run iTunes from the External Drive's iTunes Library, NOT the new Mac's iTunes Library, is this correct?

(it IS the folder I should be choosing? > The actual 'library' files are greyed-out in iT prefs so I guess I'm not > after those) What you want is the iTunes Library file, which should be in your iTunes Music folder, which is inside your Music folder on the External Drive. 1) In iTunes, go preferences > advanced and make sure (a) the location of your iTunes media (or music) folder is pointing to the external, (b) keep iTunes media folder organised and (c) copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library are checked. 2) In iTunes, go file > library > organise library and check consolidate files. Hit OK.
