Hi Alastair, I don't know if it's relevant but I got a bad fright the first time my Mac screen went suddenly black in the middle of doing something....
Until I realised that I had a "Hot Corner" set to "Put Display to Sleep" and my cursor had wandered into the corner! To check if you have any "Hot Corners" set go to Desktop & Screen Saver" in System Preferences select the "Screen Saver" tab and then the "Hot Corners" button. Cheers Neil -- Neil R.
