Brilliant Ronni, iTunesHelper wasn't installed in System Preferences. It is now and it DOES work as expected. I appreciate your time.
Not sure if this has been part of the problem, but each time iTunes opens I get a message up asking if I want the application to accept incoming network connections. I always click Allow. When I have checked in System preferences, Security, Firewall, Advanced I find that iTunes is set to accept incoming connections as I thought it should be. yet I still get this message I deleted the setting from the system prefs, then reinstated it, but with no change. This doesn't appear to affect the iPhone syncing, but it is slightly annoying having to click the Accept box all the time. I have Little Snitch installed, but have turned it off as I found it annoying. I'm wondering if that has turned something off somewhere.
