Hi Stephen,

I believe that the mobile phone service providers, Telstra, Vodafone etc., have
one additional annoying block to competition. Namely, most phones that come out
of a contract are locked to a single carrier. So if your contract was with
Telstra, for instance, you phone will only accept Telstra SIMS. This is not
always the case if you bought the phone outright, but it is the case in the
majority of phone post-pay contracts for a new phone.

You can remove the lock by phoning your service provider and asking them to
remove it. Sometimes this is a free service but sometimes there is also a fee
involved.

Sorry to be so vague, but as you are aware, condition on contracts vary greatly
and change quickly as well. A phone call to your service provider will tell you
what you need to know.

Cheers,
Carlo
