Hi Brian, How long before you have a replacement battery? I would not leave the swollen dead battery in the MacBook Pro, I would remove it. You don't want it bulging more and splitting the casing and/or causing damage to your MBP. I had a bulging battery in my old 17" MacBook Pro, I took the battery out and used it connected to power until a new battery arrived from Apple. The Processor speed is throttled with the battery removed, so you might notice the system is not as fast as before. There is no problem using it connected to power without a battery on your desk. You need to take care when transporting it though that you don't get any dust/debris inside the battery compartment.
