That is correct. When there is no battery in the MBP and you disconnect the power cable the MBP will immediately shutdown. When the MBP is in "Safe Sleep": The RAM contents are copied to the hard drive before the Mac enters sleep, but the RAM remains powered while the Mac is sleeping. Wake time is very fast because the RAM still contains the necessary info. Writing the RAM's contents to the hard drive is a safeguard. Should something happen, such as a battery failure, you can still recover your data. Since 2005, the default sleep mode for portables has been Safe Sleep. I agree with you wishing Apple would change their minds and release a new 17" MacBook Pro. I'm holding on to my 17" MacBookPro8,3 (late 2011). I've had so many offers from professionals wanting to buy it "just name you price Ronni"... But my MBP is NOT for sale at any price!
