VDCAssistant - this is present - that is 'filling up" the console with error
reports.
VMWare Fusion - I use this for Windows 7 x64. I will check to see if it is
sharing the camera.

I don't think it is a permissions thing, more a software conflict.
If the problem disappears in safe mode it is almost certainly caused by third
party software.
It seems to be potentially caused by third party apps used for display
mirroring or streaming.
Do you have any of these installed? They have been listed as causing crashes &
camera loss in 10.9.2
