How large is the External Drive you have formatted 'Mac OS Extended
(Journaled)' - Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table?
If there is nothing on the external drive, and if it is 1 & 1/2 to 2 times
larger than the hard drive on the computer use Time Machine to backup the whole
system.

Time Machine will regularly backup everything on the Laptop... including iPhoto

NOTE: iPhoto must be closed 'Quit' when Time Machine does a backup, if iPhoto
is left Open TM will not backup iPhoto.

Hold down Shift + Option key while choosing 'Empty Trash'

If that doesn't empty the trash
Open Terminal.app
Paste this command rm -r ~/.Trash
hit return key
