Hi John, Ok, this sounds like you have purchased Apps using the 'Old' incorrect Apple ID at some time. This means apps are associated with your old Apple ID. If you have downloaded apps from the App Store using your 'Old' Apple ID you won’t be able to update using the new Apple ID. All apps are forever tied to the AppleID under which they were purchased.
Go to the link below and follow the instructions and choose "Forgot your Apple ID" Fill in the information in the resulting page and Apple will find it for you and help you reset your password. <http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5787> If not successful you might need to contact Apple Support to sort this out.
