Hi Ronni, Daniel and Alan,

Many thanks for your quick replies and advices.

I forgot to mentioned that two things happened lately which could explain the
loss of the Ethernet port:

Due to a lightning strike very close to my house I lost my internet connection,
which eventually turned out that my Modem/Router (Telstra’s) lost its internet
function, as confirmed by the NBN Technician who came to investigate. I
fortunately had a spare modem/router and the internet and home phone were back
in action.
There was a Security Update on 16 Nov 2018 to Version 10.13.6, and shortly
after the update the Ethernet connection stopped working.
So, I do not know if it was the close lightning strike which did some damage,
although the computer is connected to a Belkin UPS/Surge protector, or the
Security Update did upset the Ethernet port somehow.

I have reset the SMC as suggested by Ronni and Daniel, unfortunately with no
success. I am now looking closely at Alan’s email to see if I can further
confirm that the Ethernet port is damaged.

Many thanks to everyone for the advices. I will be paying a visit to MacWorx
for a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adaptor and also ask them to check the iMac.

Kind regards and good night All,

Philippe C.

Hi Phillippe

There is a check you can do with High Sierra for ethernet firmware. This should
at least indicate the scope of your problem: “just” the hardware or possible
EFI corruption.

My late 2009 iMac lost its ethernet port a few years ago. Opinion from MacWorx
and other experts was to replace the logic (mother) board. As the ethernet
port was not essential for my use, I put up with the lack plus other occasional
odd behaviour. I eventually installed High Sierra which included updated EFI
boot software. This firmware update fixed all the odd problems I’d been
having. Ethernet is not essential for my computer usage.

This is an extract from the eclecticlight.co <http://eclecticlight.co/> website
by Howard Oakley. The article title is “Which EFI firmware should your Mac be
using?”

However, if you’re that curious, High Sierra and Mojave offer another firmware
checker, which examines BCM5701 ethernet devices. In Terminal, type
/usr/libexec/firmwarecheckers/ethcheck/ethcheck --h
to see its usage information. The command
sudo /usr/libexec/firmwarecheckers/ethcheck/ethcheck --integrity-check
performs a check on your ethernet firmware, provided that your Mac has a real
ethernet port. You can find the current version of the ethernet firmware listed
in the Ethernet Cards section of System Information.

This may not remove the thorn from your foot, but it may help bring the pain
into perspective.

Cheers
Alan
