I recall I had a suspect attachment to an email many years ago reported by the
virus software I was using at the time (I can’t remember which, it may be what
I am using now). But that attachment was said to be a Windows virus. So, in
effect that makes zero effective viruses for me since my first Mac in 1987.
However, in my mind as a low risk but high consequence category, I have
continued to pay for Intego virus software and it has never reported anything
(else).
It doesn’t seem to slow the system down with its “real time scanning”, but if
you want to do a “full scan”, although Activity Monitor doesn’t show much
processor use, it makes the system pretty much unusable and takes a long time
to do the scan.
Ideally I would like to get rid of it.
But, is AV software like vaccination? If enough of us get and stay inoculated,
we have provided immunity for ourselves and herd immunity for the group (ie
disincentivizing Malware creators from bothering with the MacOS)?
Strangely I see Windows as the place where viruses abound, but I run it in
Bootcamp, but for nothing critical to me, so, I haven’t bothered with Windows
AV software. I don’t think I have picked up anything .....
People mightn’t recommend Norton’s, but do you run or recommend other AV
software or just think that no AV software is needed?
Thanks
Adam
