My take on it is this: Goober's old suit looked rather cheap, and Andy's suit
was very stylish. From a writing standpoint, the ripped coat meant Goober would
have to wear Andy's suit instead, which would help Goober impress his old
friend when they went to the fancy restaurant.
And now I'll tell you the rest of the story. That old brown suit originally
belonged to Howard McNear (Floyd the barber). Around the time Jim Nabors joined
the cast, a friend of Howard's died, and Howard gave that old suit to the
funeral director for the friend to be buried in (you have to admit, it makes
more sense than paying 50 cents a day in rent). But, the suit did not fit the
dearly departed man, and so somebody got the idea that Gomer should wear it on
The Show. Gomer, of course, was neither wealthy nor sophisticated, and could
hardly be expected to wear the latest fashions. Later, the same suit became
Goober's suit.
