I've mentioned it before, but my wife and I are the "principals" of our company. We have a couple of full time people working for us now and a couple of part timers. But we "act" like a much bigger company.
We often take on projects that are outside the expertise of anyone in our company. In those cases, I use outside contractors for the work. This has worked very well in our favor and I highly recommend it.
If we pay a contractor $50/hour for a project (as an example), we bill him/her out at $80/hour. They get paid a good wage and we make a little profit ourselves.
That "technique" serves us well because we bid on absolutely every computer related project that we come across. Of course, it takes research before you bid on a project.
Find someone who can do the project for you and get a bid from them first. Add what profit you want to make on the project and then bid on the project yourself.
This was tough at first because we didn't have a good network of subcontractors we were dealing with, but as we did this more and more often, it became easier and we got a good feel for whom to contact on our list for various projects.
There are some really talented people in this list, so at the very least you can contact a number of them to get bids on projects you'd normally pass over.
Give it a try, I think you'll find it will add to your bottom line.
