Matt, Just got back to the screen. This is a very good point; while I have no overt reason to think either company is anything but above board it seemed a bit strange for a merger between what is essentially a sophisticated flea market (with an extended bidding process) and a financial company, which should be very carefully regulated.
I can remember Private Eye going on for years about the fishy nature of BCCI before the company collapsed. Even its main business was the transfer of money between countries virtually without question; it largely served the Asian communities. And it was mainly small business Asians in the west who suffered. As with Parmalat (and I think with Enron) the accounts are made opaque by the transfer of monies between a plethora of subsidiary companies all round the world, often in tax havens and homes of secretive banks like Switzerland and Lichtenstein (where Maxwell hid the loot). I imagine PayPal will remain safe for a few years, but I would want to know how it is regulated a couple of years down the road.
