David:
Let me explain my position. We are in the process of building a new temple and
at the same time, we have the website, just two years old. We were wondering if
we can use the Internet to allow the public to make donations to the church. We
have people in other states sending us offering by mail and people from other
countries, like Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico, Cuba, etc. that want to submit
offerings as well. We just wanted to look for a tool to facilitate the process,
in a professional way.
In the future, in order to collect funds for the temple, we were thinking about
creating a shopping cybermall so we can sell t-shirts, CDs from our music band,
etc.
I understand your advices and I will consider them carefully. Thank you for
your tips and help,
Best regards,

Peter,
I suppose that it depends upon the nature of your church, but my church's
website does not include any of the features that you describe. I have
developed a separate site for donations, but this has not been put onto the
Web and resides on my laptop.
For regular payments, people seem to prefer automatic payments or credit
cards. We have one member who uses Internet banking to transfer from his
account to ours. I think that Paypal may be overkill.
It may be useful for a shop, but, even then, people in a church prefer to
congregate. If someone is not mobile, then others will visit them. I
think you should consider carefully all the cultural features of a church
or other nfp organization before trying to fit them into a commercial model.
Regards,
David
