one of them. My boss eventually downloaded another copy but the
shortcuts and the programs under Start -> Programs disappear. I have
looked in Windows Explorer to find it, but there is not listing for IE
under Programs or Windows.

That's why you need to search for the exe for the missing programs.
For IE it's iexplore.exe.  Your anti-virus should have taken care of
any possibility of Kama Sutra or anything else.

Installed any new toolbars lately? Could such a toolbar or desktop
management tool have hidden the files? New music/multimedia manager?
Might be worth a check on the My Computer |Tools | Folder Options.
