Much of what he says is unexceptional. Mac is a dependable
proprietary, sealed platform. That's it strength and weakness.

If we want to use his car analogy, its got a BMW price but it really
is a Mini Cooper. That makes it better than a Redmond Yugo but not as
good as a handcrafted machine. There's a lot of glitz, good press and
it makes a great vvrrrroooooommmm. But for the price difference most
people will take the Yugo since it too does work out of the box right
until it falls apart and then you can replace it easily. And if you
want a real high performance machine you will custom build either
yourself or someone else.

You don't see niche cars in fleets either just like you don't see Mac
office networks. Macs show up in offices as specialty machines, like
they do in print shops for some graphics work. But you only rarely see
them as desktops. They aren't built for it. Scot Finney just had an
interesting piece on this very subject in his newsletter:
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/93.htm#aapl
In essence he argues that the very never-crack-the-case strength of a
Mac won't work in the world of corporate IT. And setting up the
servers just makes people shudder.

Its just the same as most things: six of one half a dozen of the
other. If you're not a game player the Mac is a good longer term
value. Linux is an even better longer term choice if you want to do
the work. And Windows will let demonstrate the blissfulness of
ignorance. Personally, I do longer term with blissfulness. Sooner or
later you gotta test the site in IE.
