I'd be interested to know what things he/she "really NEEDs to work" that
 didn't work for them.

I kind of see his point there, but the flexibility to have your system
exactly the way you want is also a very strong point of Linux, I think.

Personally, I see Macs as sitting in between Windows and Unix systems:

* Windows - for your basic computer user who doesn't know there's
anything else out there, gamers, business users forced to use Windows by
their employer, people who aren't particularly interested in computers
and just use whatever their basic PC came with;

* Mac - more advanced users who want a system that Just Works, without
the need to set much up; graphics/designery types; trendy types

* Unix/Linux systems - more advanced users who want a system that suits
them perfectly, set up the way they want it, with their choice of
software.  Developer types.

That's my (over-)generalisations, and I'm sure plenty of people will
disagree... fair enough!
