I rather think it Mac are for those who want a computer they don't have to
think about. In my experience customizing a Mac requires you to go into the
FreeBSD core and use VI after jumping through hoops if you want to say run
the Apache module in any way other than the default Apple install with paths
of mac.local/~user/whatever

Windows is much easier to customize. Setting up the server is a breeze with
virtual directories through the IIS snap-in but can also be done by command
line if the user prefers. Probably the crowd I hang out with but I know far
more developers who are using Windows than any other OS. I know very few who
develop on the Mac and a few who develop on Linux but they are the minority.

I can guarantee that my Windows tablet is far, far more customized than my
Mac in defaults and other core manners. On my Mac the biggest customization
I've is to the Apache server and to install Parallels (wonderful program).

Linux variants are probably the most customizable but also the ones with the
steepest learning curve. I gave up Unix decades ago and have no desire to go
back. Been there, done that, don't want to do it again.

Personally, I don't care what operating system a person uses but I sure as
hadyes wish people would quite evangelizing and knocking other people's
choices. There are many people who choose Windows, not because it is what
their computer came with but because they find it fits their needs best.
Heck, I've got three Macs sitting here and my personal favorite of all of
them is the G4 PowerBook because of its form factor but the MacTel MacBook
is the one I use because it has features I need the G4 can't match. With
seven different operating systems currently installed on different machines
around this place my choice is Vista. Do I like everything about it - no,
but for my needs it is the best available. (When the next version of OS X
comes out which won't be too much longer I'll probably drop the two oldest
Mac OSs I have running.)

Personally, I see Macs as sitting in between Windows and Unix systems:

* Windows - for your basic computer user who doesn't know there's
anything else out there, gamers, business users forced to use Windows by
their employer, people who aren't particularly interested in computers
and just use whatever their basic PC came with;

* Mac - more advanced users who want a system that Just Works, without
the need to set much up; graphics/designery types; trendy types

* Unix/Linux systems - more advanced users who want a system that suits
them perfectly, set up the way they want it, with their choice of
software. Developer types.

That's my (over-)generalisations, and I'm sure plenty of people will
disagree... fair enough!
