What I am advocating is not solely an FTC fix, but an industrywide fix.
If all on the Net understand the problem the FTC as well as the Department
of Commerce and others are pointing to something can be started to put an
end to these invasions.
For instance, I am consumer chairman of the HITI (Health Information
Technology Institute - a nonprofit) Working Group. We are developing a
tool for individuals to rate medical sites. As we are now proposing,
subject to change before finalization, points will be awarded for certain
positive points of a site. But some things we term "showstoppers" which
means the IQ Tool used for the scoring will automatically fail the site.
Paramount amongst those is failure to disclose how and if privacy will be
protected.
All parts of the web industry needs to begin efforts to act ethically to
insure privacy is protected. Sure, it will be good if the FTC can do it,
but if you are right and they cannot this does not mean we cannot begin to
do it on our own.
