That would depend entirely on who's *at* the other end, wouldn't it?
I use PGP mail on a regular basis. Many of the messages I've received
are sitting here on my disks -- but of course I've left them encrypted
so that they're not accessible to prying eyes. And not only does this
protect me and the senders of these messages from disclosure of
the messages (not that there's anything earth-shattering in them
anyway) but it also suffices to ensure both of us that we are who
we say are and thus helps to prevent us from nadvertently disclosing
information to someone else.
Your points about the cross-correlation of data based on SSN are
well-taken: however that was done long before the 'net came along.
But that barn door's been open way too long to do much about it at this point.
