Have a new web client wants me to make some changes to their site (I did
not design the site originally). The nav links are in Gill Sans. But when I
went to make some graphics on my system in Photoship and Adobe ImageReady,
my Gill Sans does not match what I see on the site. The client swears that
Gill Sans is the right font.
I laid down some Gill Sans type in AppleWorks and it looks quite different
than how the same exact Gill Sans type appears in Photoshop and Adobe
ImageReady! How can that be? The differences are obvious. I can use the
same exact type in AppleWorks, then re-create it in Photoshop and they are
different. The shape of the letters is not the same. It is particularly
noticeable on the lower case "a", "g", capital "M" and many other letters.
Some letters look essentially the same.
Curiously, the Gill Sans text I create in AppleWorks in a word processing
document matches what I see on the web site. The Gill Sans text I create in
Photoshop or ImageReady is different.
The client sent me her Gill Sans suitcase and I installed it. Problem persists.
If you're really intrigued by now <G>, examples of the nav links in Gill
Sans that I am referring to can be viewed at
http://www.mpsf.com/portfrm.html, they're in the left lower frame.
NOTE: I did not design this site! It uses a lot of frames. Unnecessarily
complicated IMO. Also, the javascript that runs in the lower left side
frame is wildly complex. I just added a new graphic link in the lower left
frame ("Life Sciences") and it took me quite some time to figure out how to
make it work. Fortunately, the letters in the "Life Sciences" that I made
match fairly well with what was already on the site. But if I had been
required to make a work in Gill Sans with a lower case "g" or "a" it would
have been a problem.
Very weird.
