Sure, but I doubt they can't make it retrospective. I'd suggest that
when they accepted your information on the registration form their was
an implied contract in force.

Of course, as I pointed out before, that depends on the individual
jurisdiction and unfortunately the United States falls way behind in the
matter of privacy legislation. The European Community are the leaders in
this area. For example, if you want to contact somebody who has
responded to one of your ads - whatever the medium - in most European
countries, you have to ask their specific permission at the point of
contact. So whether it's a web site, or a coupon in a newspaper ad, you
have to ask for their permission to add their name to your database and
to contact them again.

This is the model which is being studied by the Australian and New
Zealand governments and I think will probably come in here. Note that it
isn't explicit to the web but relates directly to the information that
can be gathered in databases and the uses that it can be put to.
