Yeah, I noticed this too. Esp. after Altavista took on a portal look. It's
the latest Charge of the Lemmings on the net. First they all race to build
malls. Then they clutter everything up with frames. Banners. Java.
Remember push? And now it's portals. Disney paid millions to buy part of
Infoseek's portal. Gotta have a portal!

Netscape is number two (Yahoo is #1), but that's only because they are the
default startup screen for Netscape users. Poor Netscape has to deliver
their front page to 20 million users daily, but only for the first hop.
Imagine such a thankless, useless job.

The web is still trying to find itself. 

By the way, today (june 22) to Wednesday is the www.mfweb.com conference
in San Francisco for those in the Bay Area. Most of our favorite tools
will be there. I've also read that many vendors are also interviewing job
applicants on the spot.
