Since I'm the "builder" behind one search engine/directory, I figured I'd
pipe in on this one. There are a couple of factors that influence the design
of a search engine: speed and ease of use. You can't get too fancy with a
search engine since you want it fast and you want most browsers to be able to
use it. You want an interface that users can intuitively figure out which
means you can't get real "innovative" there either.
I've been trying to figure out ways to do some of the things that Amazon is
doing: ie. track your past searches and try to anticipate what you will want
next, but it doesn't apply quite so well to a search engine as it does to a
bookstore.
