Laughing!!! Why do you think they call it babelfish???
> NO, NO, NO, this will never do for a professionally designed web site! You
> must have a native speaker do the translations.
Remember the early computerized translations, "Out of sight, out of
mind" becoming "The blind crazy", and "The spirit was willing, but the
flesh was weak" ending up as "the wine was good but the meat was bad".
They are tecyhnically correct translations.
I still remember one friend talking about another student's analysis
of a French short story in which he pulled out huge significance from the
use of Elephant Brand tea as foreboding the action. My friend, having
been to France many times, said that it is the equivalent of Lipton's in
the USA. The professor agreed.
Languages and points of view change. Lithuanian in my first
language, and I speak it reasonably fluently. But having spent half a
year with a native speaker, I and others of the American Lithuanian
community found that a lot of words and meanings had shifted over the
years; and new, often unexpected ones were added for new technological and
sociological phenomenon.
Bottom line, Native Speaker is indeed what you want, and not just
someone who learned the language in his or her childhood; but someone who
uses the language each year with other in-that-country native speakers.
Otherwise, you'll end up like that guy who bought a motor home, drove
away; then noticing the button for "cruise control", punched it and went
to the refrigerator to get himself a beer. Though he did get to spend a
lot of time in bed, that turned into an awful waste of a motor home, and
of his vacation! Don't waste your web site the same way...
