way of either progress or mutual communication.

Lots of messages don't get responded to, particularly now.

You might, however, make it a trifle easier by setting your mail
handler to send out text that is about 72 columns wide, instead of one
line per paragraph. Not that it is going to make much difference, but...
it does make it a little simpler to see who wrote what.

> I've kept graphics down to compensate for the dhtml additions as far as
bandwidth is concerned. Yep, I know that I'm going to exclude anyone who
uses a pre 4.0 compatible browser and I may compensate for that as time
permits. It's not a commercial site , my target is mostly of an academic
nature. >

Aren't the academics the conservative folks who tend not to upgrade
their browsers? And the ones who got their computers some time back?

(Though on the other hand, I am commercial, and I mostly use the
text-only browser Lynx, simply because the text is a LOT easier to read in
Lynx, and it runs faster. Me? Conservative? Well... I am more
interested in thematic content than pictures.)

> I'd also like to know if my "defiance" link on the first page and
"breakdown" link on the second page are intuitive enough, given the
targeted audience I've chosen.

The site does not make much sense in text-only mode. No real thought
grabbing headlines, nothing to provoke imagination, etc. And without
text, the search engines don't have much to index on. Most traffic comes
through search engines these days, unless you are running massive
advertising campaigns. And unless you have set up a subdirectory for the
text, and blocked it with a norobots.txt file, people visiting your site
will not come in via an ordered sequence, but will be teleporting in at
random places within the site.

So, the bottom line is that textual content counts. So do META tags.
Go take a peek at my simple explanation of the use of meta tags at
http://www.mall-net.com/se_report/ and some suggestions of words that
might help. To make up for the lack of response on this list, when you
decide what five main theme keywords might be applicable, e-mail me and
I'll send you a free list of queries that have been run against those
five words.
