>Do any of you know approximately what percentage of web users have 640x480

the logs i skim say ~50% of people use 800x600, and about 25% use 640x480.
8-bit color has about half the market, with 16-bit and 24-bit pulling in
about 20% each. there's no strong correlation between screen size and
color depth, interestingly enough.. people do run their 1024x768 monitors
at 256 colors. i won't bother to speculate why, those are just the
numbers i see.
one thing to remember when discussing page layout is the printing area of
an 8-1/2 x 11 page: 539 x 672 pixels. people do print hardcopy of pages
they like, and if you think that's likely to happen with your site, you
should probably stick to a maximum width of about 535 pixels. personally,
i think that's a good size to use in any case.. even if the users hitting
your site don't do much printing, a binder with a nice set of
dye-sublimation page shots makes one heck of a sales & promotional tool.
