I think http://www.goto.com/ is one of them. They have an info page you can
get if you click on "Advertise on GoTo". I read an interview with one of the
founders somewhere (don't remember where) and I think their idea is
basically "the user will get more valid search results if the listings are
sponsored by the manufacturer/product/site", etc. In essence, "if I want
info on trucks, when I run a search on their site I am more likely to get
worthwhile results if someone paid to get listed. I won't get 8 million
pages that use the word truck". The problem, of course, is that it's all
paid for, so the results will inevitably have a self-serving commercial
slant. Whether that is something the user wants or doesn't want, I don't
know. Haven't seen any studies on it and I don't know what kind of volume
GoTo is getting.
