That should be engraved over the door of every computing/IT/MIS department
on the planet.  NOT doing it is the surest way to set oneself up
for future nightmares, because it subjects you to the whims of vendors
whose interests -- despite what they'll tell you -- are not the
same as yours.  Going with truly open standards (not shams like "Open VMS")
is immensely preferable, even if it involves more expense up-front.

Yes, sometimes it's unavoidable and necessary.  But I can count the
number of instances where I've seen this work in two decades on one hand;
and I have lost count of the number of failed projects based on
proprietary solutions.
