I do a lot of work for a client who has: internet sites, an intranet and an
extranet. All the workstations are running Netscape, although some
stations also have IE. The extranet machines could be anything.

First, what starts out as an intranet can quite easily become an extranet
as users want to access information while on the road, or from home.
Because of this, I caution clients from putting in "goodies" that will not
make the jump easily to an extranet. By goodies I mean things like larger
graphics, or embeded word files, or presentation files or programs that
will only work internally. On an intranet you generally do not have
bandwidth issues, and most users have the same applications. If the
systems goes extranet this may not be the case.

Second, what is a standard on the network this year, may not be standard on
the network a year or two down the road, BUT much of the information on the
intranet will still be current or need only a little tweeking. If too many
assumptions are made as to: which browser, screen size, applications, etc.
will be on the network, things will break down the road and have to be
re-coded.

Third, designing for only one scenario would be lovely (how many of us have
wished for a world where there weren't incompatibilities.. ) but even in an
intranet it's just not practical and we shouldn't let ourselves "get lazy"
and only design for the current common denominator.
